Splitting time between Paris and Los Angeles, acclaimed production outfit The Meat Department are an outlier in the world of digital animation. Their name is the first clue, the playful irony of branding their entirely synthetic creations as a butcher shop – with all of the juices and smells and mess that implies – is very much an intentional move from this three man outfit. With their background in hip hop culture and street art the three principals – David Nicolas, Laurent Nicolas and Kevin Van Der Meiren – take the raw energy and rule breaking spirit of their roots and filter that energy through cutting edge technology with fascinating, often absurd, and award winning results. Meat Department’s work is weirdly tangible, and often gleefully weird. They delight in their fleshy distortions of humanity and the absurdity of daily life.
